Cloud Care Update
By   / 30 Sep 2026
Effective October 1, 2026, new releases of Dynamics 365 Business Central will no longer include version-specific license keys for on-premises. For Business Central versions 28 or later, "28+" will be the relevant license key version. Releases prior to version 28 (such as 27, 26, and others) will continue to have version-specific license keys.
What this means for you and your customers
At each new version release on or after October 1, 2026, Business Central customers must download a refreshed version of the 28+ license key if they wish to upgrade to the latest version. The date on which the 28+ license key is downloaded will determine which objects are unlocked on the license file.
For example, at the release of Business Central version 30 in April 2027, customers can download a new 28+ license key to unlock the version 30 objects on their license. Customers who attempt to run a version 30 deployment with a 28+ license key that was downloaded on October 1, 2026, will receive a version compatibility warning message. The product will consider version compatibility for 28+ license keys, depending on the date on which the license key was downloaded.

What's Happening:
Standalone SharePoint Online (Plan 1 & 2) and OneDrive for Business (Plan 1 & 2) licenses are being retired.
No new purchases were allowed after May 31, 2026; renewals will end Jan. 1, 2027; full retirement by December 2029.
Microsoft has instructed Insight to turn off auto-renew on all active subscriptions on Dec 31, 2026. Active subscriptions will be set to Cancel at end of term and service will stop on your subscription’s expiration date in 2027.
The storage impact:
Each license adds 10GB to tenant SharePoint storage and 1TB per-user OneDrive storage. When licenses expire, that storage disappears — potentially creating significant shortfalls. Example: Frontline workers could lose 99% of OneDrive storage (1TB to 2GB)
Your options:
Pay-as-you-go storage (November 2026)
OneDrive extra storage capacity packs (100GB – 6TB)
Upgrade to Microsoft 365 suites with built-in SharePoint/OneDrive
Archive and backup options for cold storage
Next steps:
Audit users with standalone licenses
Review current storage usage
Plan license changes before your subscription’s expiration date in 2027

For Government Community Cloud (GCC), available in US only the price increase will be phased in.
The increase will impact all new and renewing subscriptions beginning Jan. 1, 2027.
No capabilities or entitlements are being removed as part of this change, and eligible nonprofit and education discounts will continue to apply to the updated pricing.

Organizations that relied on Publisher for document creation and design should transition to alternative solutions such as Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, or Microsoft Designer.
Support for security updates, bug fixes, and technical assistance is no longer available. If your organization still uses Publisher, we recommend converting any existing Publisher files to a future-compatible option.
