The Adoption Paradox
Key Research Findings:

Our latest research with senior European maritime leaders uncovers a critical paradox in the industry's approach to Artificial Intelligence. While the focus is often on the power of the technology itself, the real barrier to progress is a profound lack of trust in AI outputs. This hesitation stems not from the technology's potential, but from foundational weaknesses in data quality, governance, and the cultural readiness to integrate AI into critical operations.

11% of maritime leaders are "extremely confident" in embedding AI outputs into core business processes, with just 21% feeling "highly confident" in relying on AI-generated decisions.

35% of organisations have achieved extensive, day-to-day use of AI, with the majority (55%) still navigating moderate, early-stage deployments.

33% cite skills and talent gaps as their primary barrier to scaling AI, followed closely by technology integration challenges (30%).

Nearly 69% identify edge AI as an important focus for their future roadmap, highlighting a strategic shift toward hybrid and distributed intelligence at sea.

In maritime, trust isn’t optional, it’s foundational. As CTO, I see AI not as a disruptive force, but as a strategic enabler that strengthens decision-making, enhances operational resilience, and supports our decarbonisation goals. The challenge is not whether AI can deliver value, but how we deploy it safely, transparently, and in ways that respect the complexity of shipboard and port environments. With the right governance, hybrid infrastructure, and investment in people, AI becomes a tool for confidence, not compromise."
