What if, as a service provider, you could extend and scale your current services in a cost-optimised way, with reduced risk and investment? What if you could offer your customers a quick and easy access to public and private services and help them meet the challenges of today’s business in an easy-to-manage hybrid cloud?
Just stop musing: VMware Cloud on AWS (VMC on AWS) brings VMware’s Software-Defined Data Center software to the AWS Cloud and enables customers to work securely from any location with access to more than 200 AWS services.
With over 4 years of joint engineering, the underlying service that VMware and AWS have designed provides you and your customers enhanced VMware functionalities integrated in the solution and a single point of contact for support and service integration. It is not without a reason that VMC on AWS is VMware’s preferred service for all vSphere workloads in a public cloud.
Before addressing some of the key benefits of VMC on AWS, let's look at four use cases that would make the world a happier place for service providers already organized around VMware. What does VMC on AWS mean for:
Migration
VMC on AWS gives you and your customers the ability to move running(*) workloads and apps to the public cloud without any refactoring or rewriting by simply using vMotion technology in tandem with VMware HCX. Entire datacentre migrations are also a possibility, with your skilled VMware team able to use their skills to plan and migrate as needed. As they are used to managing the VMware SDDC on premises, migrating business-critical workloads is no longer a complex procedure as the same SDDC is used within the AWS cloud, fully supported and run by VMware.

Disaster Recovery
Disaster recovery can also be delivered as a service using VMC on AWS. Using VMC on AWS enables you to provide on-demand protection for applications, VMs and entire sites, using native orchestration to provide failover and failback capabilities. Used in tandem with VMware Cloud Disaster Recovery (VCDR), this ability can be used as Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS).
On-Premise Extension
As you saw above, VMC on AWS uses the VMware SDDC, which you also use in your data centres. This removes complexity, making it much easier to grow or extend your assets. Whether it's expansion due to an upcoming hardware refresh, the need for additional test and dev environments, or the need to offer your customers access to native AWS services and scalability.
Multi-Tenancy
Without the ability to provision tenants for your customers – particularly smaller sized customers – this solution would not be for everyone. This is why VMware Cloud Director services are also available on VMC on AWS. With VMware Cloud on AWS SDDC, you are able to provide efficient and self-service multi-tenancy in VMC on AWS, ensuring consistency, security and network isolation for all tenants.
The benefits to you and your customers are many and varied. In a survey by IDC among service providers, they specifically mentioned:
1. 46% faster migration: As described above, the speed with which applications, workloads and services are migrated, can be up to 46% faster, because the underlying enterprise-grade VMware Software Defined Data Center underpins both your on-premise assets as well as the VMC on AWS infrastructure.
2. 43% reduction in total cost of operations: The majority of the skillsets, resources, processes and governance you need for a cloud migration are already in use on premises. Your staff is also already fully trained on it. So, you can simply adopt your activities and associated workflows one-to-one. In addition to convenience, efficiency and easier management, this leads to cost savings with up to 43% reduction in operational costs compared to any other migration method.
3. Together with a 5-year ROI of 479%, VMC on AWS is a compelling offering, allowing you to differentiate your business and ensuring that you continue to deliver value to your hard-earned customers.
